DIY - Wall Decor

I'm in bed have an afternoon lay down before I'm meant to go meet a friend for afternoon tea and just remembered I had a bit of a baby room update to post.


I found this inspiration pic somewhere on Pinterest or tumblr and wanted to replicate the frames for Baby Ks room, but I'm generally not very crafty or artistic, so I wasn't really sure how it would turn out - and although it isn't quite as good as I hoped, I'm still happy with it.



I started by buying a bunch of cheap frames from The Reject Shop for about $4 each and painted them all white. I still had some leftover touch up paint for our door frames that was just taking up space, so I used that (not sure what I'll do now if one of the doors needs touching up, but we'll cross that bridge later). I also found some frames that I've bought/been given over the years that don't really suit my taste anymore as they are and painted them too. That was the easy part.


Arranging the frames as they would go on the wall was kinda difficult for me as, like i said, I'm not naturally a very artistic person. I eventually found a layout I was happy with, then just had to find the prints to go in them.

I ended up downloading from etsy sellers and printing then on my home computer, but this probably would have worked better if I picked up some papers from a scrapbooking store or something. My printer isn't exactly world class.
















I mapped out the layout on the wall using a very simple method - probably not the most efficient way to do it, but it worked. I used the largest frame in the bottom left hand corner as my guide to measure from and worked out the distance I needed between each picture hook. I then taped up blue painters tape as an outline on the wall and using a spirit level marked out the hook placements. Then I realised I didn't have enough hooks. So plans went on hold a couple days until I remembered to pick some up from the supermarket.


I ended up using the Command 3M wire hooks that come in packs of 3 for around $6. I like them mostly because I don't have a drill and because I don't like to commit to actual holes in the wall. I wouldn't recommend applying them for the first time in hot weather or on freshly painted walls though, as the glue can melt and down will come hook, paint and all. Happened in my study. Not particularly a good time.

Like I said, I'm quite happy with it, even though it's not quite as effective as the inspiration pictures I found. At least I have a layout and the frames now, so I can switch up the prints whenever I want.

Bit of nail chat, bit of interior chat

Trying the capture the sparkli-ness of Chi Chi's Disco Diva, but to no avail. Probably would help to use a real camera and not just my iPhone.  You'll just have to trust me that this is the sparkliest mother I have ever seen.


It's a sparkle polish in a clear base with so awesome multicoloured glitter going on.  It's also quite opaque - I did two coats to get a chock-a-block full of  glitter nail.  Worn as an accent over OPI's Skull and Glossbones, which is one of my absolute favourites, definitely the best from the Pirates of the Caribbean collection. I love the way it can look quite different depending on the lighting - indoors it looks a light grey, outdoors it takes on more of a beige-y tone. <3

The plan was to head out to ikea today to pick up some new organisational/storage furniture for around the house, but I've turned into a bit of a lazy bones so I don't think it's going to happen. I want to get these few bits -



Bedside table will be used as a telephone station - at the moment we've got everything piled haphazardly on our kitchen ledge and it just doesn't look pretty.  Trolley will go in the main bathroom as extra storage - at the moment the cupboards are filled with out beach towels, but since that will be the baby's bathroom, we're gonna be needing some more space in there. I wish ikea would sort out their online ordering/delivery policy so you could sort it all out online rather than order it, have them ring you with a quote, pay over the phone, then get your goods. Surely if other online stores can do it, so should ikea. Wah wah.

Haul: Home Decor

I've been on a bit of a homewares bender the last couple of months - since I wasn't allowing myself to spend money on beauty and fashion items during March and April, I turned my attention to home decor - yay!

Most of these items came from various local boutiques - nothing online, so I can't tell you where you can find them :(

I must admit, most of my inspiration has come from Stylizimo.com - it's no secret I love Nina's taste and the way she has put together her home.  I'm even thinking of painting an old side table white tomorrow.

I got this pair of frames only the other day - I love them.  You can't really tell from the photo, but the backing is distressed mirrors, which I love. These are also quite meaningful to Joe and I as we visited most of these places together when we went on our 'Eurotrip" in 2006.  My dad is coming over on Sunday morning to hang them in my kitchen for me, since I don't own a drill.  I really need to get me one of those :)




My new cushions are from Big W and Target.  I'd been looking for some knitted cushions like the one of the left since we moved in two years ago, but everything I found was upwards of $100 - Big W had this style for $15, so I was happy with that :)  I got two.  The butterfly is also a recent addition, only setting me back $14, so they are my bargains. I haven't really had cushions that I've actually liked on my couch at all yet, so I'm a little obsessed with finding the right ones.




I've been seeing versions of these rustic-looking coasters everywhere, for years - I think I even bought my auntie some for her birthday about four years ago.  But I loved this design in particular, I think it must be the colour scheme :)  So I made them mine.



I bought  this clock at the same store as the coasters - it has a storage section in the base, just for extra excitement.  I haven't really found a place for it in our current house, but I think of it as a piece for my future, larger, family-type home. It will go in the future, larger, family-type formal lounge ;)


I also picked up these artificial flowers from my local florist last month.  I still haven't found the perfect vase for them - they're currently in the gorgeous vase my dad got me for Christmas, which I feel is a little too elegant to be hidden behind the pale blue frame.  Speaking of - I found the frame (which came with a cute print of the London underground that I removed) at a new-ish stationary store in the city.  I LOVE IT.  I also grabbed a smaller white one, but I haven't found a home for it yet.  The butterfly was one of the first things I bought when we first moved in.  It's been hanging on my bathroom door ever since, but I thought it'd be fun to hang it in the empty frame.



I finally feel like our house is starting to look like a home.  It felt so bare for so long - I know it takes time to accumulate these things and to develop a style, but I was getting quite frustrated!  There's still obviously a way to go but I'm so happy with the way our home is coming together.

Coveting: Cox&Cox.co.uk

Coveting of a homewares kind this week.  I found this site when I was searching for bomboniere for our wedding last year.  I've never purchased anything from the store, but I love browsing through all the gorgeous pieces they stock.  It reminds me so much of my time in the UK, I tend to get very nostalgic.  I'm sure one day something will catch my eye that I just won't be able to  resist, but until that day, I will continue to covet practically everything from Cox&Cox.co.uk.

It's All White, It's Okay.

My favourite go-to site for interior decorating inspiration is Stylizimo.com.  I've spent the best part of this lazy Sunday just going back over post after post, practically drooling over the gorgeous pictures of the Scandinavian-style homes Nina has posted about over the last few months. 


Here's a taste of what I'm talking about.











I love how everything looks so clean and fresh, the mixes of white, beige, grey and mauve tones, the different textures and the homey feel.  These are not all from the same home - but they give you a general feel of Nina's taste and the look of her lovely blog.  She also has a lot of DIY tips and how-tos (although I haven't been game enough to try any of the out).  Slowly, slowly I think this is how I'm being inspired to decorate our home. 

Damn, I wish I had a fireplace.

And white shuttered windows.

And purple tulips.

Interiors: Whitney Port, LA

Just so you know, I have quite the girl-crush on Whitney Port.

I love her style, her show, her clothing line, her hair, her ability to seem like the only normal girl on The Hills, and I love the pics of her new LA house. This is the way I've always wanted my house to look (since we moved in, you know, a year and a half ago).






The blue couch - I loved it in New York on The City and I love it in LA. So gorgeous with the orchids and pin-tucked coffee table/ottoman.

That is the kitchen of my dreams - so much storage space! The perspex chairs are quite unexpected, but with the cushions, I think they tie in nicely with the rest of the house.

The bed is actually quite similar to mine at home, but the lamp is exactly what I have been searching for (and am yet to find).

The colours, airiness, the girliness and general whimsy of these rooms makes me happy. I love how it's stylish, but not in an intimidating way, where you wouldn't want to mess anything up or be afraid to put your feet on the couch. This is a perfect example of how you can keep your walls and floors neutral, using your furniture and accents to add personality and atmosphere to a home. I'm feeling very inspired.

I'll have to do a Best Of: post on Whitney soon. Just warning you: It'll probably be a big one - there's not much wrong the girl can do, in my humble opinion.
